A Mountain Wilderness
North Cascades National Park, dubbed the American Alps, was a breathtaking stop on our US journey. As Marco and Eleni, we craved a nature-filled adventure. Marco, the planner, chose this rugged park for its dramatic peaks and glaciers, while Eleni, the storyteller, was eager to capture its turquoise lakes and towering forests.
Trekking the Trails
We started with the Cascade Pass Trail, a 7.4-mile hike offering jaw-dropping views. The trail climbed through wildflower meadows to a pass framed by snow-capped peaks. Marco, map in hand, pointed out landmarks like Sahale Glacier, while Eleni photographed the vibrant lupines and cascading waterfalls. The air was crisp, and the silence—broken only by marmot whistles—felt profound. Our guide shared stories of the park’s grizzly bears, adding a thrill to our trek.
Lake and Wildlife Wonders
Next, we kayaked on Diablo Lake, its turquoise waters glowing from glacial silt. Eleni’s camera captured the lake’s surreal hue, while Marco noted the area’s biodiversity—home to lynx and bald eagles. We spotted a black-tailed deer grazing nearby, a quiet moment that felt like a gift. Lunch was a picnic of sandwiches and trail mix, eaten on the lake’s shore with views of Colonial Peak.
Exploring Nearby
After our park adventures, we visited the town of Stehekin, accessible only by boat or trail. Its rustic charm and homemade pies at the Stehekin Pastry Company were a delight—Eleni loved the marionberry pie, while I savored the apple. We also stopped at the park’s visitor center in Newhalem, where exhibits on indigenous history deepened our appreciation. Eleni’s photos of the Skagit River were destined for our blog.
Why We Loved It
North Cascades was a humbling escape, its rugged beauty and wild serenity recharging our souls. The trails and lakes fed our love for adventure, making it a must for nature lovers.
